Evolution History Of Butterfly Valve

The original butterfly valve with supervisory switch is a kind of simple flapper valve with loose closure, which is usually used as flow control valve and damping valve in water pipeline system. With the application of chemical resistant synthetic rubber in electric actuated butterfly valve, the performance has been improved.

Application of Butterfly Valve in Industry

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) not only has the characteristics of strong corrosion resistance, stable performance, not easy to aging, low friction coefficient, easy forming, and stable size, but also can improve its comprehensive performance by filling and adding appropriate materials, so as to obtain butterfly valve sealing material with better strength and lower friction coefficient, which overcomes some limitations of synthetic rubber. As the representative of polymer materials and its filling modified materials, ZOLOTO butterfly valve has been widely used. With the application of high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, strong corrosion resistance, strong erosion resistance, and high strength alloy materials in butterfly valves, cryogenic butterfly valve with large diameter (9750mm), high pressure (2.2kn / cm2), and wide temperature range (- 102 ~ 606 ℃) begin to appear, which makes the technology of butterfly valves reach a new level.

Most throttle butterfly valves can be used for media with suspended solids due to the wiping property of butterfly valve plate. According to the strength of the seal, butterfly valve can also be used for powdery and granular media.

Butterfly valve is a kind of valve which uses disc type opening and closing parts to open, close, and regulate the fluid channel, which is not only simple in structure, small in volume, light in weight, low in material consumption, and small in installation size, but also has good flow control function and sealing characteristics. It is one of the fastest developing valve varieties in recent ten years. Especially in the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, and other industrial developed countries, air actuated butterfly valve is widely used, whose variety and quantity are still expanding. It is developing towards high temperature, high pressure, large diameter, high sealing performance, long life, and excellent regulation characteristics. With the progress of butterfly valve technology, the reliability and other performance indexes of butterfly valve have reached a high level and some butterfly valves have been used in the market instead of globe valves, gate valves, and ball valves. In the foreseeable short period of time, especially in the application field of large-medium caliber and medium-low pressure, rubber lined butterfly valve will become the dominant valve form.

Development Direction of Butterfly Valve

Due to the application of CAD, CAM, and FMS in the valve industry, the design and manufacture of automatic butterfly valve have reached a new level. They not only comprehensively innovate the design and calculation method of valve and reduce the heavy repetitive routine design work of professional personnel, but also make the technical personnel have more energy for the improvement. Besides, plastic butterfly valves also help shorten the cycle and improve labor productivity. In the field of metal sealed butterfly valve, 3D sealing products designed by CAD and manufactured by cam numerical control have appeared, which makes the sealing surface free of any extrusion, scratch, and wear during the opening and closing process, thus improving the sealing performance and service life of ductile iron butterfly valves by orders of magnitude.

Butterfly valve has small flow resistance and can control flow sensitively when it is fully opened. Therefore, butterfly valve is widely used in large diameter regulation field and will gradually become the dominant valve type.
